Lower Silesia

Lower Silesia is the region located in the central Europe, in the river Odra plain, at the foot of glamorous Sudety mountains. It is the land of possibilities, attracting with the beauty of the landscapes and nature, as well as numerous historic monuments and health resorts.

 

The Odra River, flowing through the Lower Silesia, is one of the region's symbols. It combines the communicational importance with natural values.

 

 The city of Wroclaw, capital of Lower Silesia, is the showcard of the region. Not accidentally it is considered as one of the most fashionable places in Poland. It is inhabited by over 600 thousands residents and represents a resilient economic, administrative, educational and cultural centre. The wealth of architectural monuments and unique atmosphere of Wroclaw is admired by tourist from all over the world.

 

Through the ages a number of multifarious cultures were interspersing each other and left many monuments and other architectural objects, including thousands of historical buildings (edifices) and urban units.
Lower Silesia is the land of stone strongholds, keeps and castles, dating back to the Medieval times. A special interest should be given to Ksiaz - one of the biggest castles in Poland - the Czoch's castle, and several historic ruins, e.g. in Bolkow or Chojnik.

 

Many historic monuments of sacred architecture can also be found here. XIIth century Cyster's monastery has left many splendid abbeys and monastic units, e.g. the biggest in Europe monastic unit in Lubiaz or Krzeszow and Henrykow abbeys.

 

The most distinctive examples of lower-silesian historic monuments are churches in Swidnica and Jawor, which were signed in the UNESCO world heritage site list.

 

The Wang Temple in Karpacz is another distuinguishable edifice.   Moved in the XIXth century from Norway, it represents a well-preserved example of an early-medieval Viking culture. Places that  also attract great numbers of tourists are the renovated centres of lower-silesian cities, most notably the beautiful Wroclaw's old town and Ostrow Tumski, numerous gothic, renaissance and baroque churches, palaces, and courts, together with interesting modern objects and constructions, characterized by magnificent artistic and historic values.

 

Lower Silesia is well-known for its mineral waters' springs. Known from medieval times, they have attracted many people from all over the Europe already in XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.
Several health resorts with multifarious curative offers have been placed here.
Possessing unique micro-climate, they are conducive to the rest and recreation.

 

The varied landscape and climatic conditions of Lower-Silesia give great possibilities for the active tourism development. The tourist treasure of the region are the Sudety Mountains, with their highest peak on Śnieżka - 1602 metres above the sea level.
These values attract lovers of rock-climbing, hiking and bicycle trips, as well as skiers and snowboarders. Also canoers and aerial sports' lovers have the opportunity to fulfil their passions.
