The Masovian Voivodeship is almost entirely situated in the Middle Poland Lowlands area. Flat and hilly plains, formed during the glacial era, prevail in the landscape.
The voivodeship lies in the river Vistula plains. Main rivers are represented by Vistula, Bug, Narew, Pilica, Wkra, and Radomka. Landscape is characterized by not sizeable moraine hills, river plains, and sandy dunes in the Vistula and Bug plains and on Kurpiowska plain. Along the rivers high escarpment were formed, on which in the Medieval times Masovian towns and cities were being established (Warsaw, Czersk, Plock, Wyszogrod, Zakroczym).
A narrow piece of land in the south is a highland area. Przedgorze Ilzeckie, a part of Kielce Highland, begins there.
Summers in the region of Masovian Voivodeship are warm, while winters pretty cold. It applies especially to the north and east. The most warm area is Warsaw and surroundings. The annual rain-falls are low, ranging from 500 mm in the west to 600 mm in the east and south.
The natural values of the region have rather local importance. The Zegrzynskie Lake is one of the main tourist-recreational centres. Popular lidos are situated there, among others Nieporet, Rynia, Zegrze, Serock. It is also a good place for watersports. The large disadvantage however, is the considerable pollution of water.
For those who like recreation by the lake, The Pojezierze Gostyninskie would be a perfect place. It is very attractive for its landscape. Also the Lackie lake with the Lack lido is pretty popular as well as Zdworskie lake with the Koszelowka and Zdworz lidos.
In the region of Plock, the Wloclawskie lake serves recreational purposes.
In Kampinowska Primeval Forest, beside marvellous nature and the National Park, other attractions await. In Palmiry one can visit a cementary, where 2 thousands of Poles, killed during the German occupation, were buried.
The river of Narew, together with its side streams, has picturesque water routes to offer to the lovers of nature.
Zelazowa Wola, Fryderyk Chopin's birthplace, is another popular aim of tourist trips.
Pilgrimages visit Niepokalanow and St. Mary's Sanctuary, founded by St. Maksymilian Kolbe.
Rivers Swider, Wkra, Liwiec, and Pilica has gained lot of popularity among the tourist from Masovia. Among pine forests, towns like Pomiechowek, Szczypiorno, Goslawice, Swider await for those who lack peace.
The traditional folk culture can be admired in Kurpie area, in towns of Mszyniec and Kadzidlo. In August one may visit the famous Masovian Countryside's Museum.
The voivodeship possesses one health resort - Konstancin-Jeziorna - which invites everyone interested in curing rheumatism. One may be here rehabilitated or just simply have a good time.
The biggest assemble of historic monuments exists in Warsaw. Its historic centre, signed in the UNESCO world heritage site list, is the most precious place, alongside with Wilanow and Lazienki palaces, and the whole Royal Road, with numerous palaces and baroque churches.
Beside Warsaw also Plock is very important, when the amount of monuments is considered. One may here admire the Tumskie Hill's buildings, together with the fragments of the castle and reneissance cathedral.
